Nuland, Blinken, Kallas, etc. all originate from Ukraine, Poland, the Baltic states of the former USSR or Israel, and this seems to make it virtually impossible for them to remain unbiased when forming or influencing foreign policies of other countries.
When Blinken addressed his Congress in the aftermath of Oct 7th, for example, he said, "I am here as a Jew...".
I am sure most Americans have nothing against Jews. However, I am also certain that most Americans would like Mr Blinken to have remembered that first and foremost he was there as the US Secretary of State rather than a Jew and as such he was appointed to his role to serve the interests of the US and the US citizens rather than those of Israel and was supposed to do so in an unbiased manner.
Similarly, both Nuland and Blinken have ethnic roots in Ukraine, and both seem so passionately, if not obsessively, attached to the place that it makes you wonder whether or not they were so interested in the Ukrainian politics because this was in the interests of the US, the country they were supposed to serve in their official roles, or they were so bothered about Ukraine because they were addressing their personal traumas!
Indeed. Nuland and Blinken (and significant connected others) of Ukrainian Jewish roots.
A lot of Jews died in Ukraine. As a kid I remember reading about the Simon Wiesenthal Foundation in the formerly great newspaper known as The Guardian, before it became a Western security services daily bulletin. The prime target of the Simon Wiesenthal Foundation was a Ukrainian Jew, whose name escapes me. I think they found him in the end but he was about 90? I can't remember the outcome.
It sounds like a conspiracy theory, but the roots of 'Project Destroy Ukraine' do have Ukrainian-Jewish-American authors and conductors, particularly Nuland. Getting revenge on Ukraine 80 years later, by getting a million Ukrainian men killed, particularly the militant 'far right' elements, AND getting Russia to take the blame, would be both ingenious and psychologically disturbed in equal measure.
Puts on J R Ewing voice: "I'll get you back for what you did to my Grandaddy!"
Azov were holed up in the factory complex in Mariupol for about 4 months and left there. Did Zelenski see the opportunity to get rid of them? Much to I suspect everyone's amazement, given Putin's aim of denazification, Russia exchanged them all (?) in a prisoner swap. Perhaps Putin playing 5D chess and handing Zelenski back the problem?
Another barking politician, essentially poisoning overall atmosphere, being followed by media creation narrative operators, rumbling from somewhere, to nowhere.
Good article Isn - there is definitely something of the night about her. I get a certain froideur whenever she crosses my gaze. So typical of the EU appointees, undemocratic and aloof, but also very dangerous. As you mention, she may blame it on her ancestry, but she and her parents did well over the years under the system. She has also been very forgiving of her husband’s business exploits and doubtless not averse to the benefits. I am sure that she has an acquired Vicar of Bray mentality to get by.
On top of everything Kallas is just plain dumb. I guess Ian had to be diplomatic and did not make a comment on her lack of intellect.
Prof Jeffrey Sachs used to know her father and wondered what happened to the daughter, because the father was quite a decent man. And a highly-positioned apparatchik, so I don't think Kallas was deprived of too many things in her childhood.
Oh yes, I remember reading somewhere that she complained about a deficit of sweets in the Soviet-era shops so the poor thing had to satisfy her sweet tooth by eating sour cream with sugar.
Appreciate the incisive summary of this strange woman's background, which I have wondered about since she was first appointed. I am an American with strong connections to Europe and I was surprised by the selection of someone so crude and so antithetical to many qualities Europe once brought to the world stage. Watching her small-minded anti-statesmanship, is she a leading indicator of Europe's downward slide under the elites and the bureaucracy?
Good to see someone finally calling her out and filling in the background. Thank you. Enjoying your interviews with various podcasters. All the best to you.
The ascendency of Kaja Kallas seems to mark the complete and total subjection of Old Europe by New Europe, to use the infamous distinction made by Donald Rumsfeld back in the day. The Ango-American neocons clearly set out to weaponize the historic grievances of the Baltic statelets and Poland (Rumsfeld's New Europe) against Russia and that has brought us to where we are now. It boggles the mind that the foreign policy of the EU (population 450 million) is being determined by the historical grievances of a country whose population is 1,35 million. How can it possibly be in the interest of other EU countries, such as Spain, Portugal, Italy -- who don't have borders with Russia -- to have their interests driven by rabid Russophobia? This is an utterly ridiculous and unstaintable situation. Von der Leyen may want her EU Army, but the majority of the member states appear neither willing or able to indugle her in this vulgar, dangerous fantasy.
Great post Ian, there is little doubt that Kallas is completely delusional and demented in her hatred of Russia and that this is entirely ludicrous since her family benefitted enormously from Estonia being in the USSR, accepting that many others didn't. I was gutted by Brexit but I am becoming increasingly skeptical about over-reach by the EU into foreign affairs, after all, there is no EU military force to implement anything and likely never will be, certainly not a powerful one!
What more does Ukraine get from a quick Trump peace deal and signing away its mineral rights to the US that it couldn’t get from simply surrendering, holding elections (as Putin won’t talk to Z) and keeping its mineral rights?
Apart from the decades of meddling and provoking, what does any of it have do with the US?
Zelensky is an actor given a part to play by Biden after the coup etc etc etc.
The reason that the US can't stop this by promising (and being believed) not to meddle anymore is that in four years they may well start doing it again.
The whole thing is contingent on the US not on Ukraine.
The US is miles away and is not an impartial peace negotiator, with no vested interests, brought in to help.
So, they put pressure on Zelensky to give up, which they seem to have done. Fair enough. But why does he has to sign away the minerals to the US as well? Trump wants to stop paying for the war and to detente with Putin to weaken China.
Trump doesn't need to be incentivised with Ukraine's minerals to get involved?
Yes, a russophobic person can never be in charge of a European foreign Diplomacy. Its a comun sense and the head of the European Comisión lacks this virtue
If you draw a blonde wig on Joe Biden you get ... Kaja Kallas.
The facial resemblance is uncanny.
I think 'she' is Grandpa in drag.
Other theories are available.
Kally da Rue Paul?

Merkel was an East German and member of the Communist Party before the fall of the USSR.

"The prime target of the Simon Wiesenthal Foundation was a Ukrainian Jew"
Should obviously read "Ukrainian Nazi".

There’s no shortage of barking politicians, it seems. Her bark is definitely bigger than her bite.

She's just click bait for the masses, good on the eye and the testosterone. Russia, US and China won't let her near them.
Will nobody rid us of this turbulent diplomat?!
I hope you mean Kallas and not me...? :-)
Of course.
I thought the phrase "turbulent diplomat" neatly encapsulated the essential contradiction between her job and her character.

Do you see any likelihood of Zelensky giving up without pressure from the US?
Hi Ian,
