Suppose that defense is the extension of the national strategy. The UK navy will necessarily be smaller without the vast overseas colonies to connect to. Destroyers are needed for long-range escort missions, but a destroyer-alone strategy is viable only if long-range supply ships and air cover/support are available. Given the circumstances, I doubt the British Navy can get enough funding. IF so, then docking the aircraft carriers to pay for anti-air and anti-sub destroyers and frigates seems more appropriate.
