A commendable writing, Mr Proud, though I would like to point out that Hamas acted in 2023, in fact, reciprocally to take hostages as a bargaining chip for the Palestinian hostages whom Israel has illegally tortured and kept in captivity for years.

Podcaster Keaton Weiss put it quaintly. Without the exact quote I am paraphrasing him: the descendants of the victims of genocide have committed one themselves, with the aid of descendants of those who did the original one. The descendants of the perpetrators are in war with the nation which liberated Auschwitz, denying the descendants of the liberators therefore participating the ceremony of the remembrance.

In other words, we live in the funhouse mirror of ahistory, the day committed remembering victims of Auschwitz has turned into a travesty, a blasphemy of historic truths.

We memorialize Auschwitz and many other tangible reminders of the Holocaust not only to pay homage to the victims but presumably also to ensure that such a thing never happens again. In view of all that has happened since 7 October 2023 in occupied Palestine, Holocaust remembrance seems wholly performative at this point. To quote Georg Hegel — 'We learn from history that we do not learn from history.'
