"Though, unfortunately, Europe has become a fertile ground for politicians and bureaucrats who want to impose their ideal of democracy on other countries in undemocratic ways."
No. They have no "ideal of democracy". They just want to dominate and subsume Georgia. Another step in the breakdown and domination of the northern hemisphere's greatest contiguous resource space, Russia, that is their ultimate target.
There's not an Ideal anywhere to be seen beyond the performative junk. Euro-ideologues work with this one principle (the Euro Prinzip) : we are always and everywhere superior, by definition.
Does "The Blob" sitting comfortably behind their desks in Westminster and Brussels really understand the realities on the ground in countries like Georgia, faraway places of which we know little (to quote Chamberlain)? Your analysis suggests that they are quite ill-informed, which would explain a lot of the current foreign policy mess we have got ourselves into.
Thank you, Ian. Taking defeat is the most important lesson for any political force in a democratic country. I'm so sorry for Georgia not being able to develop normally, through beneficial economic ties with different countries.
You can draw parallels to Azerbaijan which it's dictator is as much loved now by EU . It's worth a deep dive. Why would we buy gas from Azerbaijan but cut off Putin if we do it solely out of principles.
But dear Ian correct me if I'm wrong nobody of the EU Commitee presented himself in your Parliament menacing you that if you pass a law about their incomes declaring where they came from. and secondly about the French President end of cycle.
I saw you in that great meeting in Georgia, fantastic one of the best
The trend of opposition parties lobbying foreign governments for sanctions—essentially outsourcing political leverage—undermines democratic institutions and national sovereignty. The UNM’s attempts to trigger Western punitive measures appear less about defending democracy and more about regaining political relevance through external pressure.
Thank you, this piece was a real education. 'Peace & Democracy" a sub text for regime change & let's blame the Russian Federation at the same time!
Indeed!
Love your work, Ian, but this:

David, thanks - fair challenge.

I suspect they do not, sadly.
